How To Train Your Dragon Review: DreamWorks Delivered A Fantastic Live-Action

On June 9, we scored invites to an advance screening of the new live-action How to Train Your Dragon at SM City Cinema in Iloilo. If you're a fan of dragons, epic adventures, or just incredible filmmaking, you're going to want to hear about this.

Everyone wondered if live-action could match the animated classic. We went in curious and a little nervous—but from the first scene, we were hooked.

From the moment the movie started, it felt like we were flying with the dragons. The 3D made everything pop out—dragons, fire, even the waves in the ocean. At some points, we wanted to reach out and touch Toothless!

What impressed us most was how naturally the actors embodied these iconic characters. Hiccup maintains his endearing mix of awkwardness and determination, but with a depth that only live-action can provide. Astrid shines as the fierce, intelligent warrior we remember, and her dynamic with Hiccup feels authentic and earned. Stoick commands respect as the formidable chief while showing glimpses of his tender paternal side.

Then there's Toothless—the real star. Despite being entirely CGI, every gesture, every expression, every playful moment feels genuine. The animators captured his soul perfectly.

The story follows the same basic plot—Viking meets dragon, friendship changes everything—but with new scenes, characters, and deeper exploration of Berk itself. There are laughs, thrills, and yes, some tears. No spoilers, but have tissues ready.

This isn't just a cash-grab remake—it's a loving reimagining that honors the source while standing proudly on its own. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering this world for the first time, prepare for an emotional, thrilling ride.

How to Train Your Dragon is now showing at SM City Cinema

Pro tip: See it in IMAX 3D if possible. Trust us, you'll want to experience every detail of this dragon-filled adventure on the biggest screen available.
